A clinical study that emphasizes the benefit of medical skincare in combination with dermatological treatment

A constant effort has been put into the development of the Hyaluron-Filler formula.
The idea for the clinical study was born in the Beiersdorf headquarter in Hamburg, Germany.

Injection of Hyaluronic Acid is a popular standard treatment of aesthetic dermatologists to effectively treat facial wrinkles. But little research had been done into whether cosmetic anti-wrinkle products could successfully enhance the effect of these treatments – until now.

We always work in mixed teams; we combine our expertise in the formulation of skin care products with the input of aesthetic dermatologists to develop effective products that support their treatment.

Rainer Wolber, PhD, Head of Research & Development Eucerin

A pioneering clinical study conducted by Beiersdorf AG in cooperation with top aesthetic dermatologists has revealed that Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler successfully boosts the effect of Hyaluronic Acid fillers. What’s more, it’s the first skincare range in the world that’s been proven to do so.

The study design

47 woman tested Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler Day Cream and Night Cream, plus Eye Cream twice a day.

Forty-seven women received Hyaluronic Acid filler injections in their nasiolabial folds (laugh lines) and/or around their eyes (crow’s feet). They also applied Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler products to one side of their face and vehicle creams to the other twice a day – a routine that started 4 weeks before the injections, and continued for 14 weeks after.

The vehicle creams did not contain the active ingredients of Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler, Hyaluronic Acid and Glycine Saponin, in every way, with one critical difference: they lacked the active ingredients, Hyaluronic Acid and Glycine Saponin, that make Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler so effective at reducing fine lines and deep wrinkles.

Crucially, the study was “double-blind” – meaning neither the women nor the investigating dermatologists knew which side of the face Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler or the vehicles had been applied to.

According to Rainer Wolber, the study sets a high benchmark for cosmetic products as “we choose a double- blind vehicle-controlled design that is usually used in the pharmaceutical industry for drug testing.”

The results

The study’s results were conclusive. Applying Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler twice daily was proven to visibly boost the effects of wrinkle filler treatments.

“The results surpassed our expectations and demonstrated that the regular daily application of Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler, with its unique ingredient combination, can help to enhance the effect of Hyaluronic Acid injections. The products were very well tolerated and increased skin moisture, “ Wolber said. “And the participants’ self-assessments paint a clear picture of the extent to which the positive effect is perceived by users.”

It was a completely new concept for the study design
